These are the comments that make me not want to write.
When my sister saw my finished project, an eight week Bible study that I wrote, designed, and had spiral bound with a full-color cover, she said, "Did you make this?"
"Yes. I wrote it, designed it and had it printed. It's an eight-week Bible study the leaders of my church asked me to write."
"Well, aren't you crafty," she said with a snide, condescending tone.
My mom was there. She didn't say a thing. My dad always talks about his work projects but never asks about mine. They don't get it. They don't understand that it's more than work. They don't really know me.
These are the comments that keep me writing.
While looking at a banner I had professionally done for an upcoming conference, the youth guys at our church were bugging me about printing the dates on it.
"Now you can't use it for next year," they said.
"Oh, but next year we'll have a totally different theme and concept."
They smiled and shook their heads, "You creative types . . ."
I slowly rolled the banner and smiled. They think I'm creative. I'll take that.
Today at Bible study a single gal in our church came to me and shared that she's getting ready to fill out the paperwork required for the adoption of a baby.
"Kim, I heard you're really good at writing. There's some essay questions and I'm not very good at that kind of stuff. Will you help me fill out the forms?"
What an honor. What a privilege. I jumped at the chance and told her to jot down a few ideas and we could meet soon to work on the forms.
Another gal shared a powerful testimony about how God had worked in her life. She mentioned something I had shared in a previous talk about writing down things and journaling so we remember. Afterwards, she approached me about starting a writing group.
Some days I just think God puts angels in my life to keep me on the task. It's his way of saying, I know you. I know what you want. You can do it. I believe in you.
Oh yeah, there are days I want to write, today is one of them. Bring it on. Bring it on.

Kim, you go girl! Keep on writing. I've been looking through your study and it is great! One thing I really like about it is that it isn't a 'fill-in-the-blanks' type of study. Your questions are thought-provoking without saying, "this is the 'right' answer." It gives way to good discussion I think.
I hear you on the comments that make you not want to write. Some of my family members don't or won't read my blog, and some of my closest professed friends don't "get me" either...they don't even know I write...
Listen to the gentle proddings of your creator. As you said, He knows you and created you this way...that's all that really counts!

Yes, He puts people like that in our path for sure! He has plans for you and all this talent He gave you, never doubt.
It is so funny how the people who are with us our whole lives, can not really know us. Because when you write, it is such a huge part of who you ARE. You feel like it is as obvious as the color of your eyes.

Fight to write!
I don't let most of my family see my writing for exactly the same reason. It's so much better, and healthier, to surround ourselves with encouraging people. It's amazing what comes into our lives when we allow creativity to flow through us. Congrats on the book Kim. You don't need anyone holding you back.
That's awesome that you're getting so much support from friends. Family, well, they can be a different matter all together. I don't think mine knows much about what I write, and i don't want to show them anything because I don't want to be disappointed in how they'd react. Re your sister, I wonder: could she be jealous of your talents? That's the only reason I could think of for someone acting like that.
To me, that comment from your sister comes across as envy for your creativity. FWIW. :-)

I for one really enjoy your writing. Everyone that has any inclination of writing at all looks at others' writing and compares their own with it (or at least I do). There are those that I read where I think "yeah, I'm that good" and those like yours that I read and only hope to be at some point in the future. Keep up the great work.
