No one TOLD me it was so good . . .

Okay friends. I'll admit I'm a latecomer on this one but in the last two weeks I've just discovered a little gem that sparkles like a diamond ring in the noon-day sun for this information collecting gal.

National Public Radio

Why, why didn't anyone tell me there was such a delightful place on my radio where I could hear interviews of the most INTERESTING people? Like the Oceanographer and his actress wife who have started a foundation and present their message about the need to take care of our oceans in an off-Broadway play? Or fascinating, intelligent interviews with celebrities like Andrew and Elizabeth Schue (promoting their new film "Gracie"), and the guys in the new movie "Knocked-up" (one of my favorite celeb interviews ever - hysterical!) and one of the coolest, smartest rock stars ever - Bono. I've heard a series of stories on the Six-Day War, commentaries on the ending of "The Sopranos" and the history behind Ronald Regan's "Tear down the wall . . . " speech.

And their voices. So many rich, honey-sounding voices as they come off my radio. They sound like their sitting in the seat next to me giving me my own personal update on the most interesting things going on in the world.

I'm addicted.

I was thinking I wanted an MP3 player for my birthday next month to load my new "Dreamgirls" and John Mayer CD's on but now . . . I'll be looking for one that's got a radio on it as well.

Edited to add: To find your local station, go to www.npr.org and click on the top where it says "stations". You can put in your zip code and it should tell you where to look for your local station.

PS - My hubby wrote an incredible post about a day in his classroom and he's feeling a bit blue that not many people have read it. Can I ask a big flavor of you my bloggin buddies? If you have time, go here for a good story of what it's like to teach sixth grade.

Speakin' of school, only two more days - woo hoo!

Kim,

You've enlightened me! Where do I find this wonderful spot on my radio? I'm intrigued. I too, have never listened to such a gem. Thanks for passing it on.

I read your husband's blog. Totally made me laugh...and made me realize how much science "stuff" I've forgotten...and makes me appreciate great teachers like him!

I love NPR! They've also got some great interviews with Musical Theatre people from time to time.

Oh, wait until you discover podcasts! Interviews, instruction, comedy, drama, anything you might have an interest in learning about. Even NPR broadcasts. It makes my commute time worthwhile.

Kim,

Been a faithful listener for years. I gave up commercial radio (Christian and otherwise) after becoming bored with the music and the talk.

For you Portland listeners... 91.5 is OPB, our local NPR station.

Hey Kim--

Thanks for stopping by at my blog, and for leaving the great little story. :)

I love NPR, too. In fact, I was with my Dad this week and we were driving somewhere and he said, "Do you listen to this a lot?" And I said, "Yeah." He said, "Doesn't it seem a little... liberal?" I thought about it and yes, okay, it can lean left. But it's mostly about artists so that's to be expected, right? So anyway, I explained to him all the reasons that it's a great radio station and then he said, "Are you liberal?" I had a good laugh over that one.

And hey-- do you and Brad go to Village? My wife Krista and I do... and I write and she takes photos. Go figure. Anyway, we're at the 1130 service usually. We'd love to meet you guys.

Started listening to NPR yesterday after reading your blog. Found it via my computer so I can listen while I work. I like it! I may be hooked. It is a nice change.

Thanks!

Aw yes. I am a talk radio junkie, and I enjoy NPR as well. Don't they have down loadable shows? Then you could put them on your ipod? I do this, although I have never tried with NPR, but I bet they do if you look on the homepage...

So funny! This sounds just like me when I discovered it -- I remember sitting in the driveway in my car until the end of the program before I went in the house. That was This American Life which if you haven't heard it yet, you must. Can't think now when it's on -- I think Sunday morning and Wed night; it's AWESOME. And Fresh Air with Terry Gross.
